Culture/Arts

  • Brookgreen Gardens in Murrell’s Inlet is a must. It is a not for profit sculpture and botanical gardens established by 1930’s industrialist Huntington and his wife Anna Hyatt Huntington. He was a shipping and railroad tycoon who purchased four former slave plantations and combined them into an amazing sculpture oasis. He built a Moorish Castle and his wife did large-scale sculpture. The grounds boasts over 2,800 permanent pieces on display, many sculpted by Anna, but many donated as well. An entry ticket will give you a pass good for a week and it’s nearly impossible to see it all in one day. Also on the grounds are a few restaurants, an outdoor zoo, farm, and boat ridge in the marsh where rice was once grown and harvested. Brookgreen owns the property on the other side of Hwy 17 and it is leased to the State of South Carolina and used as Huntington Beach State Park. It includes wonderful marshland that plays host to many species of migratory birds and a few gators. The beach in the park goes for miles with no buildings or resorts on it. It’s a great place to see the sunrise over the ocean. See more at https://www.brookgreen.org/botanical-gardens
